M-x apropos "tab" tells me that there are two variables
that you are want to fiddle with. The first of these is
c-tab-always-indent which does weird things to the tab character so
that you should be able to both use it to re-indent according to mode,
and insert real tabs. The other is "indent-tabs-mode" which if you set
to "t" you'll get tabs instead of spaces.
Personally I hate tabs, but I agree that it makes more sense
than having people hate you.
