JUBA, 3rd October 2011-The United Nations (UN) has established air surveillance operations in Jonglei State to deter any potential attacks between the Lou Nuer and Murle communities, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General in the Republic of South Sudan Ms Hilde Johnson has announced. Ms Johnson asserted that the cycle of violence in the State must be stopped so as to save lives. She appealed to the community, religious and political leaders from the region to impress upon the people the need for peace and discourage them from waging retaliatory attacks on each other. Ms Johnson said that the UN is monitoring the situation keenly and has put adequate measures in place to prevent further violence. Particularly, she said, the UN is working to prevent the abduction of women and children. She also said that the UN is working with UNICEF to facilitate the restoration of families which had been displaced from the region by the violence and that the UN will provide non-food items and other support to the families in Pieri who bore the brunt of the last weekend attacks. The UN officer made these remarks on Friday when she paid a courtesy call on Hon Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin the minister for Information and Broadcasting, who is also the Official Government Spokesperson, to exchange notes on the security situation in Uror County of Jonglei State. Dr Marial commended the support of the UN in supporting the nurture of peace in the Republic of South Sudan. He reiterated the commitment of the government to collaborate with the UN, the church and other neutral organizations in the pursuit of lasting peace in the troubled areas of Jonglei State.
