Beats me, but I just got off the phone again with FS and it turns out that this Application Mode nonsense is bound up with something called ARIA. In the JAWS online help, locate the application-specific information on either Internet Explorer or Firefox and you should find out more than you ever thought you'd want to know about ARIA. I told them pretty clearly that they need to get something into the online help that us dumb users will be able to find and an entry about ARIA ain't good enough. Fact is that I never heard of ARIA until today and wouldn't have known to look it up.
