Make sure it's not a systme whide issue and not just Jaws. I've had to deal with this problem in the past and indeed, it was a larger problem having to do with sound cards and so on. Have your friend try playing audiostreams or local audio files on their pc to see if the stuttering also happens there. If so, then... your friend is in for a long time visiting tech support forums. On one of my old machines I had to do a registry fix and just recently on my Windows 7 laptop, after trying nearly everything under the sun, I was able to fix my stuttering issue by uninstalling and reinstalling my RealTech driver. Who knows, your friend may in fact have an easier solution to their problem, but at least in my experience, the stuttering has turned out to be a major pain to resolve.
