If so, then... your friend is in for a long time visiting tech support
forums. On one of my old machines I had to do a registry fix and just
recently on my Windows 7 laptop, after trying nearly everything under the
sun, I was able to fix my stuttering issue by uninstalling and reinstalling
my RealTech driver. Who knows, your friend may in fact have an easier
solution to their problem, but at least in my experience, the stuttering has
turned out to be a major pain to resolve.

This took probably about a hundred hours of work, but it is done. It will
improve, but at least you can get back in the driver's seat again.
I don't know how this was anything short of a miracle, but it is good.
