Nice tips. I wasn't aware of the system performance option via the control
pannel and visualization. The other things mentioned I have played around
with. Thankfully in my case, uninstalling and reinstalling the RealTech
driver for now fixed the problem. I read online fixes from cooling pads for
the laptop (which I have anyway), hardware issues, this and that registry
hack and tweeks to the system galore.
On my old XP machine I have no problem messing around in the registry, but
I'm not so keen to try out too many tweeks on my Win7 laptop. 
Hopefully the visualization switch to best performance will only help.
