Mike, This is not a cure, but a suggestion for how to minimize disruption. I have a similar experience with IE11 on Win7 using JAWS 15. When IE gives up the ghost, I shut down JAWS with the combination of JAWS key+Win key+F4. I wait a few seconds, then ring back JAWS with my hotkey. Almost every time it enables me to close IE and reopen it without having to reboot.
Note that this is not the standard close JAWS command, without the Windows key. Reassured by his suggestion for how to eliminate the risk of deleting files in the prefetch folders, I've just tested Tim Ford's suggestion. I can't say yet if it will improve my IE performance, but my computer hasn't run up the white flag, even after a reboot.
