I've always used Quick Settings for this. It takes a little scrolling, butt, last time I had to do it, it still worked.

Excel is a crucial mainstream application, and the function you have described, naming column headers, is vital. Freedom Scientific has known about this problem for way longer than it should have taken to fix it.
