The way this began for you, it doesn't sound like a security setting is involved.
I don't know which email program you're using. For a long time in Outlook, I had to go to the second character in a link to make it open. So, with one that began http..., I would right-arrow once to the first t, then press enter to execute the link. You might try that. Does it make sense?
