Hi David,
Windows puts a delay on the serial ports when dropping into a DOS box, which
is suppose to keep resources from being accessed too quickly, resulting in
any serial device's current activity possibly being
interrupted--specifically telecommunication sessions that might be going on
at the time. Where this delay can effect speech users is when the DOS
screen reader tries to send material to the serial synthesizer during that
delay, (2-seconds by default), and finds nothing connected to that port!
This tends to hang the system in more cases than not, especially if you have
the DOS screen reader loaded in Autoexec.bat, so it will start talking
immediately when you drop into a DOS box.
Setting the COM1AutoAssign=0 turns off that delay.
I don't recall the user's original DecTalk Express specific problem, but I
agree with you, try this fix first--it won't disable the port, but it is
worth trying first. Also, if the problem is that the express talks
gibberish when going to, or from a DOS session, then also make sure the port
settings in the win.ini file are "remmed" out with a semicolon at the
beginning of the line that is associated to that port, such as
Com1:96,n,8,1
Also, they should run the "verchk.bat" file from the Dec driver folder and
make sure the ROM has the latest revision, and if using the Dec's drivers,
check the date of the DT_DRIV file and see if it matches the date announced
by the verchk.bat process.
I use to fantasize about some day being able to afford the cost of a DEC
express, so I could set it in the middle of my back yard, get a 6-pack of
Bud, and a ballpeen hammer and make a night of it! Great speech quality,
but not worth the hassle, in my humble opinion.
