Hi,
I was under the impression that Adobe Acrobat Reader was basically not
accessible for speech users, and have used the following web site to
convert Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) files to either text or html.

This site only converts .pdf files which are on the web themselves, but
(also at the above mentioned site) you can now install a plug-in for
Netscape which will use the same "technology" to convert .pdf files
locally (right on your computer, vs. from the Internet).
While it would be nice (for some anyway) to have this technology available
in a mor raw format (so we could put different interfaces behind it, or
use it on other platforms such as Mac or Unix) the web site and the
plug-in are all that are available thus far, as far as I know.
