Here is how I removed active desktop!

Go into the control panel, select add/remove programs.  A list of programs
should be presented that can be removed including I4.  Select it, then
select remove active desktop.  The Active Desktop will be uninstalled but
the rest of I4 works fine.

I may have missed a few tabs or something in this description but, it should
get you started.
