toward the bottom of this lengthy message is the 2 differant places that
one needs to change to turn off
h t m l.
in outlook express, plus some other settings are also covered.

if the software was just installed a wizard may appear.
if it ask if you want to make this program your default cancel it.
you may ask what about connecting to the internet and e mail server, well
no problem because the next time you relaunch the wizard will reappear.
so for now we shall set some other things.

i think i had to say no one time then cancel then yes to get by the
wizard, besure to read each screen with the jfw cursor.
i never used any of the commands for closeing a child or parent window.

its possible that you may not have this same set up when launching outlook
express.

once you are past the wizard you can do some set up.
this set upp is due to the fact that outlook express has settings that
make no sense.

first tab and you should here tree view.

i assume you have used the jfw windows explorer tapes.

and under stand how to move in a tree view.

if not go back and do that lesson first.

two things here to remember, e mail programs may display a tip or wizard
or a preview screen.

so tab on until it says their is the tip for the day.
now you know the location of the tip, so tab back to tree view.

most e mail programs also have preview screen that shows just a few lines
of text so the user gets an idea of what the message is about.

because as you arrow around this info pops up here and their the new
information can cause problems for a screen reader.
because the screen reader tracks the focus.

so new information in a differant location can cause jfw to jump to a
differant area of the screen so in some cases it is best to go into the
menus and tell the program not to display such infornation

i refer to this as a dual focus problem, their is a highlight where the
subject line is telling you information about the where abouts or subject
matter of the message.

plus new info popping up everytime you down arrow apears in the preview
screen at the same time.

screen readers can get confused so better to have only one focus.

so lets turn off both tips and preview screen.

now another word of caution is in order here.
outlook express has a feature that it shares with internet mail.

the menu changes based on where you are in the program.

tab to tree view.

hit alt key

hit letter v for view

arrow up to layout dialogue and hit enter

now tab to basic tip of the day

hit the space bar to uncheck it.

now tab down to apply

hit enter

now tab to o k and hit enter

now turn on the p c cursor

down arrow to in box

now go back into the same menu

alt plus letter v keystroke

hit letter l

now tab to
preview screen

here it will say preview pain, checked
so i guess outlook express calls it a pain and not a screen.

hit the space bar to uncheck it.

now we shall go into options

alt plus letter t keystroke

hit letter o for options

tab until it says general tab

you are in the options menu on the first page which is the general page.

tab one time to where it says check mail every so many minutes checked

uncheck it.
by hitting the space bar

now tab to where it says go to in box when starting check box not checked.

hit space bar to check it

then tab to o k.

hit enter

also on that same page is whether you want to make outlook express your
default e mail program,
no reason to check that because the wizard will take care of that.

now go back into the menu

alt plus letter t keystroke

hit letter o

tab until it says general tab.

jfw is now at the top of the page, in a multi page dialogue box.
one can always tell this because jfw usually says tab after the selection,
but only on the very top does it do this.

when you are on the top tab you can see what other pages are here by right
arrowing.
so right arrow one time.

to the choice that says

send tab

now arrow down one time, to where it says

send messages in h t m l, 1 of 2
hit the pc cursor to turn it on
arrow down one time and it should say plain text.

now tab until it says

send these messages immediately check box checked

hit the space bar and uncheck it.

now tab one time to where it says send return message in same format check
box checked.

hit space bar to uncheck it.

now tab to o k and hit enter

these modifications will make the program more speech friendly and enable
certain features for using the program off line.
their may be more that needs to be changed based on how your stuff is set up.
