eloquence speech has suddenly stopped

No, it's not the bug where if you type in a certain word, the computer
crashes when using eloquence, it's a little different.
What happens is I might be emailing someone and all of the sudden, speech
will just stop and I have to switch jfw to use the artic transport which
for some wierd reason slows the computer down.  Every program I try to use
which produces sound won't work produce sound.
Does anybosy have a fix for this?
