To read the date from the clock on the desktop:
Use alt-f6 to minimize all aps and go to the desktop. Tab to the task bar.
Use insert-s to put Jfw in "say all" mode. Turn on your Jaws cursor and
move to the time on the clock. Jfw will speak the date, which appears
before the time.
I know, it's cumbersome, but it works.
