I will jump into the fray here.
I think the problem is JFW itself. Apparently, when it is speaking there is
some type of disk action going on.
I have had this problem once, that is when I decided to read the files that
scandisk was scanning. Then scandisk took over an hour to complete.
I think that in this case, patience is indeed a virtue. If you set scandisk
to go, stay on the cancel button, with your screen echo set to highlite, and
wait patiently, scandisk will run fine.
I have never had the problem with defrag, perhaps because I learned patience
from scan disk.
