Actually I agree that hearing repeats of what I already selected is better
than hearing nothing at all, but it still causes some confusion,
particularly when unselecting, and particularly on reasonably long lines.
JAWS should say "Unselect" followed by what I unselect, but on the Win98
machine it just repeats what is still selected, of course not including
what I just unselected.
A practical example of why I regard this as a problem: Someone sends me
the following two-line message:
Hey Doug, get your copy of Internet Explorer 5.0 at
ftp://ftp.visi.com/disk3/msie5/msie5.zip.
There is a period at the end of the above URL. I want to select the whole
URL but not the period. The fastest way I know to do this is to go to the
start of that line, type Shift-End to highlight the whole thing, then type
Shift-Left_arrow to unselect the trailing period. What I should hear is
something like this:
Select ftp://ftp.visi.com/disk3/msie5/msie5.zip.
Unselect period.
What I hear instead is
Select ftp://ftp.visi.com/disk3/msie5/msie5.zip.
Select ftp://ftp.visi.com/disk3/msie5/msie5.zip
The first response, and the one I expected, is much more brief and to the
point. When I was fighting with the STB video card, I figured this was a
video issue. Now I think it comes from something else, but I have no idea
what.
Does anyone out there actually prefer this new behavior? Does anyone out
there see the original behavior rather than this in Windows 98 using JAWS
3.2?
