well lynn it is best not to use the cd they send out.
not sure why a t and t would be hard when it is built right into win 9x.
now here are some instructions that are written with jfw specific commands to
hook up to net.
its easy with the wizard in internet explorer.
by the way these 2 are 2 of the top five according to p c world.
i vouch for both having great tec support.
with mind spring or earth link here is the super easy way to set up the
connection.
by the way this works for other providers as well, but i leave it up to you to
get d n s settings for the other providers.
do not use the cd rom.
use only win 9x components
often cd versions may cause minor bugs that one can avoid by using what is in
the operateing system.
well here we go
win 98 start key
letter p for programs
letter i for internet explorer
use the wizard and just fill in the blanks.
this wizard will install all required components from the cd rom, so be sure to
have the win 98 cd rom in the p c.
you will need to get certain info from provider.
like access phone number, your pass word, and yes even a e mail address.
my e mail address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
so my user name is billcam when the wizard wants to know
but later we must make changes after finishing with wizard.
still we must enter billcam for the reason the wizard is also installing the
info into e mail.
the e mail is outlook express, and if it ask do you want to make it auto dial
say no.
later when you get familar with outlook you can manually change it back to auto
dial.
and if you do not use outlook do not worry, it does not hurt to have a second e
mail program ready to go.
also tell it know if you do not want outlook express to be your default e mail
program.
the wizard will also ask what the incoming mail and s m p t server are.
be sure to get that from your provider and if earth link or mind spring see
messages above for their d n s settings.
you will also need to get from provider the
access phone number, user name, which is really what is before the at sign in
your e mail address.
also a password.
once finished with wizard i install the d n s entries
here are the steps for earth link, it is the same for mindspring or any other
provider only differant numbers are entered.
the following numbers are the d n s entries for earth link
primary numbers
207.217.126.81
207.217.77.82
secondary numbers
207.217.120.83
below are the steps to replace your current entries with new entries.
these steps i got from earth link, plus the first step is one where the
person must be careful, and if you need to understand it is happening
at a low level where you normally are warned not to modify dial up connection,
of course we are not adding in the first part but deleteing old dial up info
which is safer ?
double click my computer
or hit enter on my computer on desk top
double click control panel
or type letter c to move to control panel and hit enter
double click network icon
or hit letter n untill it says network and hit enter
high light t c i p dial up adaptor or t c p i p
to do this with keystrokes requires first hitting the p c cursor, then moveing
to it with arrow keys until it says t c p i p then tabbing down to
properties with the tab key.
click properties button
the keystroke method is to tab to properties, and once you get their
hit enter.
in win 98 you may get a warning to do this another way, and we shall ignore it
because we are only going to delete info so this is less dangerous.
by deleteing this info we insure we are starting from scratch.
so hit enter on o k.
now a multi page dialogue box appears.
it has many pages to it.
click tab that says dns configuration
or use the keystroke method, this means it is saying we need to go to the page
that is
titled d n s configuration
one can do the following to change pages
control key plus tab key keystroke
until it says d n s configuration tab
or shift key plus tab key keystroke until you get to the top.
the top visual tab will say the title of the current page followed by the word
tab
the word tab after the choice tells the user they are on the top tab where one
can change pages with arrow keys.
then right arrow over to
d n s configuration tab
select dis able d n s
or use keystroke method, one can tab to find this feature
click o k
click o k
close any open windows
you will need to do this following proceedure below more than once if you have
more than one
provider
double click my computer
or go to my computer on desk top and hit enter
double click dial up networking folder
or use keystroke method, move to it and hit enter
clik one time to highlight earthlink
or use keystroke method by hitting letter e to jump to it
from the file menu select properties
or simpley stay on earth link choice, confirm it is highlighted, and do this
alt key plus enter key keystroke
this puts you into the property sheets
click server type tab or button
to do the above with keystrokes do the following
if it is a button tab to it and hit enter, if it is a tab that means you will
need to change to another page titled
server type
to get to that page do this,
control key plus tab key keystroke
until it says server type tab
click the t c i p settings button
write in primary d n s box
207.217.126.81
write in secondary d n s box
207.217.120.83
click o k until you have exitted all windows
8
now that you have completed both of those you need to put a dial up connectoid
on the desk top.
doing this and saving all this info, like password requires that you make a
connection, if you do not connect you will need to reinter the password.
or it will not save the password
createing desk top icon
go to and hit the enter key on my computer
go to and hit enter on dial up networking icon
click the one you want to change
or use the keystroke method, of hitting letter e to move to earth link
once their verify if it is selected.
here is how to do it in jfw
shift key plus insert key on num lock plus down arrow key on num lock
keystroke
if not selected do this
control plus space bar keystroke
then repeat the instructions above to verify that it is selected.
with that said do this,
shif key plus f 10 function key keystroke
now arrow up to make short cut and hit enter.
it will say it can not make short cut their, would you want to make one on desk
top?
say yes.
now i assume that it is now called short cut to earth link.
control plus f 4 keystroke out of my computer
now go to desk top and find the short cut on desk top.
once you land on it hit the
f 2 function key to rename it
rename it to earth link.
that way it starts with letter e, so you can now hit letter e to get to it.
other wise if you did not rename it would say short cut first like all desk
top icons maid, so getting to them would be time consumeing.

also if you have phone trouble with the access number you may need to change to
another access number here are the steps to change access number.
go to and hit the enter key on my computer
go to and hit enter on dial up networking icon
click the one you want to change
or use the keystroke method, of hitting letter e to move to earth link
once their verify if it is selected.
here is how to do it in jfw
shift key plus insert key on num lock plus down arrow key on num lock
keystroke
if not selected do this
control plus space bar keystroke
then repeat the instructions above to verify that it is selected.
alt plus letter f keystroke
arrow up to properties and hit enter
in telephone number field type the number you want to dial.
if required enter new area code
people dialing local numbers need not worry about this
be sure to check with local telephone company to insure the call is not long
distance.
now when entering the user name into the icon, make sure that save password is
checked.
now for earth link after clicking the desk top icon type in
the user name field
in all caps, the first three letters that is
E L N
the following line is how it should look
ELN/billcam
so e l and n are caps.
with the rest in lower case
if you are doing this for mindspring type in the user name
the following line is how it should look
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
that is right, the whole e mail address.
now enter the password and try to connect, if you do connect it saves it all,
if not you will need to type in the info again and also check to see if you
have save password checked.
good luck.
hope i did not miss a step, also be aware that sometimes the browser gets in
off line mode
somehow, if it does go into the browser under file and change it back
