Hi to all,
I am responding to the messages asking for further information on starting
JAWS with various synthesizers and, as this subject began with wanting
shortcut keys, this is covered, because I know some don't feel confident in
using the full path when having to run JAWS again during a Windows
session.. (I appreciate this covers some aspects of Windows manipulation
which can be applied to other programmes as well so won't be needed by all
of you, but hit DEL if this doesn't interest you.)
First, please correct me anyone who finds this not to be so, but it seems
that, when you install JAWS, a shortcut is provided for both the loading of
Eloquence and your Default synthesizer. This shortcut is placed in the
\Windows\Start Menu\programs (watch the spelling) folder by default.
If you look there, using either My Computer or Explorer, you should find
your current version of JAWS, together with any previous versions. For
example, I have JFW30, JFW32, JFW33 listed there.
There are a number of ways of assigning shortcut keys, but, as you have now
found your various versions of JAWS, follow this process:
Press "Enter" on the version of JAWS for which you want to define a
shortcut key. Here, I'm using JFW32 as my example.
Once I press "Enter", I learn that JAWS is one of seven options. To which
I may assign a shortcut key. JAWS, first I need to select it, so I tap "J"
and JAWS responds with "JAWS". Now continue with the following steps.
1. Open Properties with Alt+Enter.
2. Press CTRL+TAB and you will be on the Shortcut page and in the first
field to be completed. You should hear the prompt: "Target Edit:" You
will also probably find there C:\JFW32\JFW.EXE. That's what you would want
to start JAWS 3.2.
3. Press Tab - Your "Start In" edit box should read C:\JFW\32.
4. Here is the box with which you need to take care. The first keys you
press will be the ones assigned. You will hear "Shortcut Key, Hot Key".
Enter the key of your choice. Be careful not to use a key already assigned
and choose one you will remember. If you just tap one letter then this
will be assigned with the CTRL+ALT combination. (I tend to use CTRL+SHFT
combinations, so have to press all three keys at this point.)
5. Tab 4 times to OK and press "Enter.
You should now have assigned your shortcut key.
Close down all applications and reboot. This action isn't always strictly
necessary but it certainly often needs to be done, especially if you use a
key which you have used in the past.
When you reboot, if you wish you can check that the shortcut is in place
before removing JAWS from your system and using the shortcut key to load it
again.
If you look again at that list of seven items to which you may attach a
shortcut key, you will see that "Start JAWS with Eloquence" is one of the
options. Again, if you take a look at the Properties, you will see that in
order to run the program, the "Target Edit" line reads C:\JFW32\JFW.EXE /SELOQ
The /SELOQ is a command line option which causes Eloquence to run with JAWS.
I have tried and succeeded in running other synthesizers in this manner so,
for example, the target for the Keynote Multimedia synthesizer reads
C:\JFW32\JFW.EXE /SKNGMM
As I don't have a shortcut already defined which runs JAWS with Keynote, I
would have to first make that shortcut if I wished to have one.
If you need to make a shortcut before assigning a key, because you want to
run JAWS sometimes with another synthesizer when you load it, you can make
a second shortcut from JAWS. By default this will be named "JAWS (2)" but
you can rename it. However, be sure you define another shortcut key or
you'll certainly crash!
I hope this is useful.
