Before you reboot, have you tried simply turning your synthesizer <if it's
not an internal card> off and back on again?  I sometimes see what I've
come to call "frozen synthesizer syndrome" and merely turning the on/off
control off and back on again cures it.  I have a DEC Express and after it
boots up with its normal defaults, pressing the PC cursor key immediately
brings JAWS back to life.
