It is normal for the next message to come up automatically when you press
control D.  In order to select the messages you want to read or not read you
have to just hit escape after you are finished reading.  This puts you right
back into the list where you left off.  Hit the delete key and poof there
goes the item you are finished reading.  You can then go through the list
and delete and read whichever messages you wish to read.
