it is quite possible that the manual is an image and not text.  if
this is the case, it is likely that it will not be useable.  try a
test to see if things are working with your setup.  find the
access.pdf document and open it.  if it reads after going into access
view, then it is the document and nothing but the document that is at
fault.  there is only one thing left to do if this is the case and
that is to try and perform ocr on the document.
