The merge function merges dictionaries (.jsd), configurations (.jcf), frames
and (likely) some other items which I cannot remember off the top of my
head.
We do not, at this time, merge script files as that procedure would be far
more complicated. To wit, consider the possibility that you have written a
script named, "MyfavoriteScript" and, then, a HJ script writer adds a script
to the set we ship that has the same name - which one does the merge keep?
Microsoft's Visual Source Safe has a very good source code merge facility
that prompts the user about which change they want to keep. This might be a
good idea for a future version of JFW.
Other problems will occur when our new scripts are very different from those
a user may have modified from an earlier version of JFW. In 3.31, all of
the Microsoft Office scripts have changed (for the better) very
dramatically. Any user who may have made a subtle change to the Word
scripts will cause a huge issue for software trying to differentiate and
then merge the change into a radically different function. usually, the
Source Safe user (mentioned above) will be making incremental and subtle
changes to be merged and, thus, this is not an issue.
I know that my own script changes (I'm not a professional scripter and all
of you can feel glad that my code does not ship with JFW) are a pain to copy
over each time I reinstall JFW (which is every time we do a build - 28 so
far for 3.31) so I am motivated to get a merge facility that is verbose
enough to handle scripts. When I look at all of the other things we'd like
to do with JFW, however, I don't see such a big effort happening in the
merge world too soon.

Really? This comes as a bit of a surprise, since that's what I
thought the merge function was for. What *does* merge do? And, what
else does it not do?
