Yes, you need to remove the key before converting to FAT32.  If you leave
it on the hard disk, it will be destroyed by the conversion process.

Someone else has already answered your question about the location of the
Volume Control in Windows 98.  You should also be able to access it with
Insert+F11 which brings up a list of the SYS Tray icons.
