I wanted to introduce One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project to you. Designed
at MIT's Media Lab, its laptop named "XO" is the educational product that
embodies the philosophy of one laptop per child and the OLPC organization is
built around that as a not-for-profit initiative. Some of us in the top
leadership function as volunteers while about 100 scientists, mostly from
MIT, and some other key professionals support its global programs.

Our laptop XO is shockproof, water proof, sun friendly in screen, takes just
1 watt of energy, has its own intranet capability with and/or without an
internet, has a built in camera, no-maintainance architecture, its like a
tablet and a toughbook, takes Windows as well as Open Source and comes with
a host of applications that children love to learn with.

Seeing it President Kalam said we are living his dream. FM Chidambaram said
its a wonderful product and we should take to market where he sees 3 to 4
million units being immediately lapped up. Some call it as an instrument
that may change India the way Model T did and some others think the relative
to the change it can bring about, all the progress of the past couple
decades will seem cosmetic.

India has about every fourth child in the world and our goal is to get every
child on to screen based learning, particularly in rural India.
