Hi Bill,

I'm the primary JiBX developer. I do monitor this list, but I tend to
respond very sporadically (as mentioned in Illya's response to your
email - and thanks for the support, Illya!).

Unlike many open source projects, JiBX is not directly backed by any
major companies. Because of this, my work on JiBX is based increasingly
on what clients will pay for. Fortunately, there are a significant
number of major companies who find JiBX to be a useful tool, and some
are financing JiBX extensions by paying me to add enhancements that fit
their needs. When I do this type of work I charge a reduced fee to the
client, basically billing the client for only a fraction of the work
involved. I don't make a lot doing things in this way, but I do get the
satisfaction of continuing the JiBX progress while still paying the bills.

Right now I'm wrapping up one project of this type, a Jibx2Wsdl tool
which allows exposing an existing service interface as a Web service.
This has involved a rewrite of the binding generator and schema
generator tools, which make up one major part of the 1.2 release. I'll
post to this list soon when I have a preliminary build of Jibx2Wsdl and
the associated binding/schema generator tools ready for testing. For
another client, I'm working on code generation from schema (the Xsd2Jibx
replacement). This work is not as far along as the Jibx2Wsdl part of
things, but I hope to have it working by the end of this month. These
two projects make up the bulk of the 1.2 work.

JiBX 2.0 is hopefully the next step. However, it's likely to involve 4+
months of full-time work for me to completely implement the replacement
code generation (including source code generation) that I plan for 2.0.
I've pitched this to one potential client in an attempt to get some
financing, but so far without any results. If I can find a client to
back this and provide financial support, I hope to have the first JiBX
2.0 test release by June; if not, it's likely to continue sliding.
That's not a completely bad thing - over the last year or two I've added
most of the features originally planned for 2.0 to the current 1.x code
base - but a rewrite of the code generation, together with the binding
file changes planned for 2.0, would definitely improve both usability
and robustness of JiBX.

I've found that most of the clients willing to pay for extensions of
JiBX are using it for Web services, so that's the main focus of most of
the work I'm doing at present. Because of this I spent a large part of
last year on the Axis2 integration for JiBX, and continue to provide
support on the Axis2 project. I'd also like to get an updated and
improved release of JibxSoap out as an alternative to Axis2. I'm hoping
to finally get that done by the end of this month.

Hope that helps,

  - Dennis
