Thank you very much for taking the time to do this, Tim.

first time at the page it does load, but after approx 10 seconds of 'spinning beachball' (does not happen with Jmol usually). the second time at the page had no beachball, and a very short page load time.

This is what I've been observing on Macs, and what Miguel has observed with Linux. OK, so there is definitely something going on there. With a colleague sitting at a Linux box, we observed Java topping out its memory allocation and dying. I can't quite figure out why this particular page is doing that. You don't see the same at http://www.stolaf.edu/people/hansonr/jmol/test/proto/altloc.htm, do you?

b) does the "waiting for applet" title message disappear within a few seconds? (You may not even see it.)

yes.

c) do the radio buttons work?

first time at the page, I pushed the 'first molecule' button, and it seemed to work. the second button I pushed was 'file positions' and it locked up my browser (beachball). had to force quit. the second time at the page, the 'first molecule' button locked it up. no errors reported anywhere.

ok, that's the same as I see with some public Macs here at St. Olaf.

d) press LOAD. Everything seem to be OK?

nope. :-( third time at the page, I pushed the 'load' button and it locked up my browser. I could not continue with the other steps.

Macs!!!
