Tim and I have already explicitly stated our approval that LGPL is fine for the force field classes. I believe the jmol-developers list may have bounced that message since I'm not a member of the list. There's no need to worry about the "authors of the original babel code." The force field classes are highly self-contained. Bob has essentially taken just the bits that Tim and I (and mostly Tim) added to Open Babel.
