I think the following should work just fine:

zap;set echo top left;echo Loading....;refresh;load xxxx.pdb

The ZAP clears the model; the REFRESH forces a display of the message;
The load does another zap, but it doesn't refresh until it is done 
loading the file.
So the effect is that the "Loading..." message is present throughout the 
time the file is being accessed.
