The surface still looks quite good. Only some of the highlights are 
clipped. But it is necssary to go to 'indexed' mode manually before 
saving the file as GIF. Appearantly as default no special rastering is 
applied. Manually you can set rastering to 'Floyd Steinberg' (any of the 
two variants seem to work for this example equally well) which improves 
the result very much.

Maybe you could implement 'Floyd Steinberg' rastering also in Jmol.
