(thread #1)
whenever i want to impress someone who isn't a joni fan
i usually try cold blue steel and sweet fire
followed by maybe, song for sharon
usually gets at least a grudgingly positive reaction

(jeeez how could they not?)

once i played a musician friend "the gallery"
and he thought it was so amazing
that EVERY LINE
had a different little melodic hook or twist to it
and he was so right

(thread #2)
i think gays are more attracted to the female voice, period.
most straight males like male singers
(dylan, eric clapton, aerowsmith, melloncamp, whatever)
women and gays are more inclined to females
(just my own ignorant broad observation)
but growing up i was always drawn towards
judy, joan, joni, laura
not to mention
martha, aretha, and diana
followed by billie, sarah, and rosie in my college days
(yeah i'm a big fruit)

i especially like a chicks voice combined with an airy
or fantasticle melody and/or arrangement
gets me everytime

you know what REALLY gets me?
2 girls in harmony.
unbelievabe
the b 52's
mammas and the pappas
even abba
(and of course, joni or laura overdubbing themselves)
just soaring soaring magic

(thread #3)
well i finally bought travelog
sigh
on the positive side-i think joni's voice
is just GREAT. yes its different and older, of course
but its still extremely distinctive, expressive, and wonderful.
those arrangements and tempos really suck tho.
(for the roses, one of my most favorite joni songs,
is unlistinable. ditto for hejira and refuge.)

but i'll also say job's sad song was pretty good
(made me realize i missed it the first time around)
also liked just like this train
(in general these songs sound best ONE at a time)
any several in a row is mind numbing

su the album did send me scampering back to
taming the tiger and turbulent indigo
making me realize how wonderful they are.

joni just has to sit down and write some new songs
don't worry gang, she'll be fine
