Apparently, it was closed in 1980 for a 12 million dollar renovation. Six years later, with the money spent, the city of New York had not completed the project, and the work that had been done was a shoddy mess. Donald Trump stepped in and brokered a deal to complete the project for 3 million. The planned 4 month renovation was completed in 3 months and under budget at 2.25 million! He owns the rink concession rights, but donates those profits to charity. He said he took on the project so that his children would be able to enjoy the fun of ice skating before they got too old.
