There has to be some other problem. Are you absolutely sure that jquery.js gets loaded? Any chance the link pointing to jquery.js is wrong?
I always use $(document).ready in other files and there haven't been any problems with it. Please post full HTML and JS of a simplified example if the problem persists. -- Suni
