THIS WEEK'S TOP 8 SITES

1. Create a Graph
Math > Graphs & Graphing > Introduction

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a graph
is worth even more! Graphs make it easy to present
data in a visual manner to help viewers better
understand complicated concepts at a glance. This
hands-on math destination introduces you to area,
line, bar and pie charts, plus provides easy online
tools for creating graphs of your own.

2. History Quiz: 1900-2000
World History > Online Resources & Quizzes

In what year did Iraq invade Kuwait, U.S. and
Australian women get the vote, IBM sell the first
personal computer and the Hindenburg explode? History
buffs will love this never-ending online quiz
centering on the century just past. Match up eight
events with the corresponding date, then click Reload
or Refresh to bring up a fresh memory test.
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/8-021602/&Userid;

3. Causes of Color
Science > Physics > Optics & Color

Why is the sun yellow? Why is grass green? What about
rubies or rainbows? This fascinating site exposes
common myths and presents new theories that explain
the fundamental causes of color. The latest research
shows that just 15 physical causes exist, from
impurities (rubies) to dispersive refraction
(rainbows). Spend a few minutes coloring your
perceptions of our world -- online.

4. Word & Phrase Origins
English Language Arts > History of English

At some point in your life you may have been given the
third degree, gone the whole nine yards, put up your
dukes, faced the music or eaten humble pie. Ever wonder
where these words and phrases originated? This site will
satisfy your curiosity and more. Don't sit in the peanut
gallery or pull the wool over someone's eyes until you
explore this destination!

5. Science of Baseball
Physical Education > Sports > Baseball & Science

What's the science behind a home run? Why do curveballs
curve? Learn about the game from players from the San
Francisco Giants and Oakland A's. Test your batting
skills by trying to hit a 90 mph fastball online, then
learn what forces help pitchers put something on the
ball and batters get a good grip on their bats. Don't
head out to the diamond this summer without visiting
this site first!

6. Wacky Web Tales
Online Stories for Children > Interactive Adventures

Looking for a fun way to encourage young students to
read and write? Wacky Web Tales challenges kids to
choose a tale (The Box, The Haunted Woods, Mystery,
The Surprise) and fill in 10-15 words (a town, a best
friend's name, adjectives and verbs) that appear in
the story. Click See Your Wacky Web Tale to view the
results. Wacky is right!

ELEMENTARY SITES

7. Sun Forecast
Earth Sciences > Climatology > Weather Maps

Don't head outside to play or sunbathe until you get
the sun forecast. This detailed map of the U.S. is
updated daily with color bands representing the UV
index. Purple colors indicate that it'll take more
than 60 minutes to damage your skin, while red colors
warn that you'll begin getting burned in less than 10.
The information at this site and an SPF 18 to 32
sunblock will help you and your family stay
sunburn-free this season!
http://i.bigchalk.com/U/8-021607/&Userid;

8. Number Train
Math > Pre-K > Addition & Counting

"Choo, choo!" All aboard the number train! Pre-K kids
will love adding cars to the little red engine, each
counting up from one to 10. As each car is connected,
its number appears and a young boy says the number
out loud. When all 10 cars are in place, kids can
click each car to see a larger version complete with
that number of items inside. A fun site you and your
kids will return to again and again.

BIGCHALK WEB SITE OF THE MONTH

Earth Day Groceries Project

Looking for a new way to help kids learn about the
eco-friendly themes of Earth Day? Since 1994,
thousands of students from around the world have
participated in the Earth Day Groceries Project.
The project is simple and free of charge: parents
and teachers "borrow" paper grocery bags from
local supermarkets, which students decorate with
messages about recycling, pollution, wildlife
conservation and more. The bags are returned to
the grocery store, and on Earth Day (April 22),
customers receive their groceries in the
decorated bags. Connect to the project's Web
site to obtain a project starter kit, free
print materials and educational activities.
