THIS WEEK'S TOP 8 SITES

1. Infrared Zoo
Zoology > Zoos & Animal Collections

How can you tell the difference between a warm- and
cold-blooded animal? With an infrared camera, that's
how! View normal and infrared images of dozens of
animals at this fun NASA destination. When you're
done, read more about infrared technology in the
Seeing Our World in a Different Light section. Plus,
don't miss the informative Web video entitled
"Infrared: More Than Our Eyes Can See." The video
alone is reason enough to connect to this site!

2. "Absurd Math"
Math > Tutorials & Practice > Pre-Algebra

Ready for a learning adventure? At "Absurd Math:
Pre-Algebra from Another Dimension," students go on
special missions armed only with their mathematical
skill and knowledge. There are four challenging
adventures in all. In one installment, students link
to the home page of an evil scientist, Dr. Plenobius,
print out his entrance exam to the Airtight College,
identify a flesh-eating bacteria, then try to save
one of his lab rabbits.

3. Fossil Horse Cyber Museum
Geology > Florida > Geologic History

Learn about paleontology and evolution by exploring
the rich fossil record of horses -- online. Start
with the Hyracotherium, the small dog-sized horse
that lived from 45 to 55 million years ago. Work your
way through the ages from Orohippus to today's Equus,
the only surviving genus in the once diverse family
of horses. The instructional text is easy to read
and the images are fantastic. Don't miss it!

4. California in the 1920s
U.S. History > States > California

Travel back in time to a place where marathon dancing,
junk car races and barnstorming were the order of the
day. Southern California has long had a reputation
as a trendsetter. This amazing collection of period
photographs and accompanying text will show you why.
View images of flag-pole sitters, state picnics,
airmail deliveries, early movie production and
much more.

5. Go Figure
Math > Basic Skills > Addition & More

Stretch your addition skills with this fun online
game. Ponder each equation and come up with the
sequence of numbers that completes it. It's harder
than it sounds! Click on each number to add it to
the equation. Keep adding numbers until you discover
the answer. Talk about a mental workout!

6. Sparkle City
Health Sciences > Dentistry for Kids > Games

Space, the final frontier -- for dental hygiene?
That's right! Turn up the volume on your PC and
prepare to embark on an intergalactic journey to
learn about the importance of keeping your teeth
and gums clean and healthy. Learn new tooth tunes,
play instrument tag in a dentist's office, then
help Geena the giraffe save Sparkle City from the
Rough and Rot Riders.

ELEMENTARY SITES

7. Math Dictionary for Kids

most common math terms. Many definitions contain

list of entries.

8. Dinorama Hunt
Paleontology > Dinosaurs > Games

How long are the largest known dinosaur eggs? The
Tyrannosaurus rex nicknamed Sue had a skull that

feathers? Dig through this fun scavenger hunt to
find the answers. You'll quickly discover that
researchers are constantly making new discoveries
and updating their theories about these ancient
creatures.

BIGCHALK WEB SITE OF THE MONTH

Grad Speeches: In Their Own Words

In June, thousands of high school students will
gather in gymnasiums, auditoriums and football
stadiums to receive their diplomas and listen to
speeches packed with helpful advice: "Experience
is like a knife, it can harm you or help you
depending on whether you grab it by the blade or
the handle." Katherine Sinclair, a senior at Nevada
Union High School in Grass Valley, CA, delivered
those words to her graduating class in 2000. While
Sinclair has since moved on to college, her spirited
words linger -- online. WKCD and WhatKidsCanDo.org
has gathered a set of out-of-the-ordinary graduation
speeches at this worthwhile site, which offers
strong, youthful voices, articulating what matters
most to them.
