I usually split my learning time 50/50 with my clients, but that's not a
formal arrangement. They're getting the benefit of my experience on
projects like theirs, and I'm getting the benefit of learning the technology
they're using.

Often, this is in the context of integrating two (or more) systems, where
one of them is new to me.

A key challenge any time you're learning is that doing estimates accurately
is much harder. I just did a project connecting some legacy PHP code, phpbb
(a forum system I hadn't coded with previously), and SalesForce.com (new to
me) via SOAP (new to me) for single-sign-on customer support and lead
management. Very tough to estimate, and I missed it by 30% (which I ate
about half of; much of the overage was change requests).
