I only have hard copies. Its ok in this instance to recreate the document in
word. I had another project where I had to recreate a 30 page docuement. My
fingers never hurt so bad.
Someone made a comment yesterday about taking the scans comming in as bmps.
They are actually coming as tifs already.

I may not understand the question, but...

If you are converting the scans to pdf using Acrobat, why not convert the
document directly to pdf? That is, open the document in whatever program is
used to create the intial document and then print to the Acrobat Distiller
printer driver and create the pdf.
That eliminates the scanning step and if the files are text only, Acrobat
can downsample the resolution and decrease the file size.
