When i was in 4th grade, i started learning English in school (along
with everyone else). They were teaching British English. One of the
things they taught us was the difference between "can" and "may", and
the lesson they used as an example was:

Bob asks Alice: "Can I sit down?"
Alice replies: "I am certain that you can, but I don't think you may."
