Or, another afterthought: portupgrade -aPP first, wait for it to bomb out on 
kdelibs, then pkg_deinstall -r kdebase and proceed with portinstall -PP kde 
<whatever else you want that's not included in x11/kde3). That way you will 
have less innocent third party applications removed with the pkg_deinstall 
run.
