This might be some actual fallout of 'make install' vs 'make & && make install' in x11/kde3 ... & & > OK does this mean I need to make and make install kdebase-3.4.0 & & Should do the trick, yes. Well it did & I now I have the desktop. Here is the weird thing. Before Make & Make install of kdebase I could start kde applications (Konqueror, Kmail, Konsol etc). I am wondering if the build of kde3 did build kdebase but did NOT install kdebase. Is that a reasonable explanation? I was able to start kde through command line using /usr/local/bin/kdeinit although startkde was not present in /usr/local/bin. Looking at the dependencies I am wondering how that could happen without kdebase3.4.0 having been built. Now I have kde in all its glory!! Thank you and everyone else who has helped me through this.. you guys are great. make kdegreat & make install goodfun David -- 40 yrs navigating and computing in blue waters.
