hello listers!
i just got my root prompt back, 26 1/2 hours after entering:
/usr/local/sbin/portupgrade -O arts\* kde\* \*kde-i18n\*
(step 2 in the /usr/ports/UPDATING procedure). i'm using a
generic box with a generic motherboard, hoping to update to kde
3.4.2 in a single-user desktop freebsd 5.3b6. how do the big
boys/girls cvsup? i'm getting a tidier garage while my box bangs
away, but i can't imagine a server servicer out on a
twenty-plus- and-counting-hour long coffe break?

the steps i've taken to this point:

1] cvsup -g -L 2 cvs-supfile
 1a] cvsup -g -L 2 doc-supfile
2] cd /usr/ports && make fetchindex
3] cd ~ && /usr/local/sbin/portsdb -fu
4] /usr/local/sbin/pkgdb -fu
 4a] /usr/local/sbin/portaudit -F
5] pkg_version -v | grep -i "<" | less
 5 b] ... from /usr/ports/UPDATING: # where stuff starts getting
complicated...

        # One data file has been moved from kdeadmin to kdelibs
        # between KDE 3.4.1 and KDE 3.4.2. This means that
        # ****if you currently have the kdeadmin port installed****
        # you will have to take some precautions to update your KDE
        # installation. [<= understatement award potential!]

        # [also recommended to not use kde while 'updating',
        # so.... log out of dfa2, who uses kde, and login to dfa3,
        # who uses xfce4... *then* su into root shell and copy/paste
        # the following:

        # 1.) Delete installed packages which conflict with the updated
        # KDE ports.
/usr/local/sbin/pkg_deinstall -f kdeadmin-\[0-9\]\*
        # 2.) Now update the remaining KDE ports.
/usr/local/sbin/portupgrade -O arts\* kde\* \*kde-i18n\*
        # ** No such installed package: *kde-i18n*
        # began around 10:30am, Sat. Sep 3,05...
        # ... finally finished Step 2 at 1:00 pm, Sun, Sep 4/05
        # 3.) Reinstall the KDE ports you deleted in step 1.
/usr/local/sbin/portinstall -O kdeadmin

#6] Use portupgrade for those ports referenced
        # in /user/ports/UPDATING accordingly
/usr/local/sbin/portupgrade -vrR filename
/usr/local/sbin/portsclean -CDD
rm -rf /usr/ports/distfiles/*

any info or directions to info greatly appreciated.
