It's not really very complicated at all. Here's your upgrade with binary packages: Su into your root shell, then set an environment variable PACKAGESITE to "ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-stable/Latest/" (with ftp.freebsd.org replaced with a mirrorsite of your choice if you wish) and add '-P' after the '-O' to the commands in step 2 and step 3.
