Hey all,

This is certainly a most excellent discussion. A lot of valid points from everyone. @Farid, you and the others are right about the film strip look. A film strip will always have the connotation with movies and motion pictures, but I think a more modern symbol for Kdenlive in this Digital Age would be much more appropriate. :)

@Sam, thanks for sending that link to comparative logos, both professional and not. When I saw the one with a winking clapperboard... I almost lost all faith in humanity and threw myself off a cliff. Luckily, the more polished ones gave me reason to live again. The wikipedia certainly says something about community. While I think it's a huge advantage, my opinion would be to have the heart of Kdenlive's purpose reflected in the brand symbol: A powerful video editor to match the quality and performance of other NLE's in the typical Hollywood filmmaking industry. There are a lot of strengths Kdenlive has -- maybe there can be a graphic similar to what you're talking about on the upcoming website?

@Evert, I agree with all the advantages; that's why Kdenlive rocks! The prism idea would be an interesting one to bring to conceptually bring to life. Maybe make a draft of the idea for us to see? Ironically, I made a proposal myself that, conceptually, sounds similar to what you're describing.

@Harald, I agree with your thoughts -- I don't like the idea of a "rewind" graphic of any nature at the heart of a video editor brand logo at all. I also think the "K" has been way over-used on all KDE products. I get it... it's linking the software product with the "K-ness" of the KDE enterprise... but... eh *shrugs shoulders*.

Alright, put your Critic Caps on now! Farid, I think you had a solid concept to work from. I just finished a brand logo proposal as well, taking into consideration Farid's layout, Sam's example of other Industry professional brand logos, and JB's, Sam's, and Evert's feedback. (JB, really appreciated your feedback as the leader of this project; we all know you're super busy, and definitely respect your time, but everything helps!) I also stuck to the primary colors of the new Breeze icon for Kdenlive: blue, red, and black (They're a nice blend). I also tried to make it a design that could be easily made into a flat-colored or alternatively-styled counterpart, in the event that it would need to fit a certain icon style. This would effectively unify the brand logo and app icons, I believe.

Alright, enough talk. Here it is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cirl51m57mi3ia1/kdenlive%20brand%20logo%20v2.png?dl=0. Font wasn't part of the official proposal, but I figured it looked better to have something in there.

Let the critiques begin. :)

Thanks all,
Jesse

Just one more thing when talking about logos:

As the leading professional open source NLE, the open nature of Kdenlive
could perhaps be a useful point of difference if we were to place it on the
right side of that pro vs amateur image
(http://www.cameralibre.cc/wp-content/uploads/amateur-vs-pro.png).
It's not just 'a professional video editor', it's 'a Free/Libre Open Source
professional video editor'.
The advantage of Kdenlive over AVID or Final Cut etc is that you can modify
it, understand it, be involved in its development and perhaps use it in
unusual ways which proprietary software might not let you.
So some element of adaptability, modularity, transparency, community or
openness would be great to subtly incorporate in a logo.
A good example of this is the Wikipedia
logo(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_logo), which shows its
international global community, and invites you to help complete the puzzle.
I don't know if this is helpful (and I don't think Wikipedia's style suits
Kdenlive!) but it's just one more conceptual layer to consider.

My 2c....

You will have to go far to find another editor that allows you to edit in
as many formats, even the paid versions. (I almost said while mixing frame
rates, but there are still a few feature killer bugs open on that one)

Sooo, I also like the idea of loads of ideas, things, video, audio and
pictures all coming together, so, I thought of a prism combining light,
with a dark background, and shadows of all the video formats logos embossed
in the background... The prism can be rotated to look like a play button,
too.

:)
