Hi Iwan,

No disagreement: the colored-icons have a purpose, but I'm saying they don't have to be colored, is all. It's all well and good that they are; it's not a bad thing to introduce a little color into the interface, if even just for the sake of a few accented areas, IMHO. I think a solely monochrome scheme can look very bland (which, of course, Kdenlive isn't currently monochrome).

Definitely, the timeline cursor/marker a central element. However, Lightworks has a red timeline cursor, Adobe Premiere Pro has a red timeline cursor, AVID has a blue timeline cursor; Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro are the only ones that seem to have a black(ish) timeline cursor. If anything, I think that coloring it will /make/**it stand out more, indicating it /is/ a central element.

I admit, I expressed the reason for suggesting the change as to match the logo, but I guess there were other benefits I hadn't considered that arose after discussing it. (1) User association with the new logo (which, I imagine there can be confusion from various users about whether it's the same program or not after Google-searching it, seeing different icons in software managers, etc.) (2) It can distinguish the timeline cursor as a central element in the program (which would be congruent with the elements in Farid's logo design as well: the timeline, the timeline cursor, and the play [render/finalization] symbol).

Alright, I've spoken my peace about the suggestion. If the dev's think it's best, then go for it. If not, black and white works fine, too.

Appreciate the feedback, Iwan. And 16.04 is looking & working absolutely fantastic. Thanks to everyone for all your hard work. It's seriously showing! I've already finished multiple commercial video projects using the latest git master builds. :)

Cheers all,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,

The render icon red makes sense when referring to record buttons traditionally etc but I agree that there is no danger in pressing it, so the red doesn't serve a warning purpose. (Although I noticed that I am quicker to find it the moment I am ready to render, which makes me/kdenlive feels efficient.)

The trash icon is probably red to warn although I don't see the need. It can be undone and there's a popup if the clip is used. But even though it draws attention to it sometimes, I didn't think it was a problem.

I think it'd be worth mentioning in regards to the playhead marker because it is a central element, nearly like the cursor in a drawing app. I believe it is standard to have it black or white in timelines in both video and audio production software. The suggested purpose of the orange mockup is to color-match with the logo rather than a utility function. Also orange is close to red, which is used in timelines to indicate a cut action.

Cheers,
Iwan

    Hi Iwan,

Appreciate the feedback sir. Though, I'd have to respectfully
disagree. I agree wholly that much of the color in the program
should be related to purpose. However, there are plenty of little
accent colors that exist just for aesthetics, and they don't come
off as ambiguous or do the program any harm (e.g. the effects and
transitions have a variety of colors, though they don't have any
pattern as far as function categorically, or the trash icon in the
Project Bin being a different color than the rest of the icons, or
the render icon having a red dot in it).

I agree that the color might be a little faded; but maybe a more
vibrant orange - but still relatively close - would do better.

What I like about Farid's logo is that each component is - to me -
a symbol of the Kdenlive interface: the left bars I associate with
the timeline, the cursor is the timeline position cursor, and the
"play" icon represents the final product of Kdenlive (a final
video file). Not sure if that's what Farid was intending, but
that's what I take from it.

I don't think an accent color for the timeline cursor would do the
timeline any harm at all. That said, it's a small suggestion for
consideration. It's not a hill to die on. :) Just thought it'd
look cool. Every program should have its own unique touches here
    and there, you know?

    Hi,

It its much less visible, the orange doesn't look good on top of
    the UI.

Trying to match colors in icon, logo, software UI and website is
a problematic idea. Each of these products has a function very
different from each other and colors in these products should be
used with purpose other than product identity.

If it is wanted to promote product identity, I'd suggest placing
the logo in the background (about half opacity) in the bottom
right corner of the project bin area and make it possible to
disable it in the settings (shown by default).

    Cheers,
    Iwan

        Great stuff, Farid and JB.

A small thought about associating the new logo with the
program: what about changing the color of the timeline
position cursor in the program to the shade of orange in the
new logo? It looks like it would compliment the program in
both Breeze and Breeze Dark themes.

Here are some mock-ups I made:

            Hello Farid,

Sorry it took so long to answer. We had an interesting
            exchange on the last
Kdenlive café about your logo proposal and the website
            (1), and everyone
agrees that the logo looks great.

We decided to ask the KDE VDG (visual Design Group) what
            they think about
the logo in KDE's forum (2), to have their feedback, and
            it looks like they
            love it too.

My only concern was the scalability of the logo for an
            icon, but I saw on
the forum that you are working on an icon version, so
            that's perfect.

            Thanks for your work!

On the website topic, there were many comments / ideas,
            we will need to
discuss it further, also find someone willing to
            implement the ideas and
decide between keeping Drupal or switching to a static
            site generator..

            Regards,
