The United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO)
is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated individual, committed to deepening the
U.S.-Indonesia relationship and able to develop and manage programs to
accomplish that, for the position of USINDO Jakarta Representative, starting in
January 2010 or earlier. 



The United States-Indonesia Society was formed in 1994 by Indonesians and
Americans who believe better mutual understanding is in the national interest
of both countries. It is a not-for-profit organization with offices in Jakarta
and Washington, DC. The mission of USINDO is to improve understanding of
Indonesia among Americans and the understanding of America among Indonesians,
including the areas of politics, economics, history, culture, and to improve
the U.S.-Indonesian bilateral relationship. The mission is accomplished through
creative work and programs with leaders in government and nongovernmental
organizations, educators, the media, business, and the general public. The
prospect of a U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership in 2010 is an especially
important development for USINDO’s mission of supporting bilateral cooperation
and improving mutual understanding. 



The Jakarta Representative is integral to USINDO’s mission, and works closely
with the President and staff of the Washington, DC office. The Representative
is expected to play a pro-active role in developing and proposing new USINDO
programs, strategies for outreach to new audiences and members, and the
day-to-day management of Indonesia-based activities. In addition, the
Representative follows current Indonesian events; informs the Washington office
of Indonesian developments; and builds contacts with relevant organizations,
individuals, and government bodies in Indonesia to expand USINDO’s knowledge,
role, and impact.

Responsibilities

- Conceptualize and organize a strategy for speaker programs and events in
Jakarta, and the programs to implement that strategy. Identify and obtain
appropriate speakers for the topics in the strategy, assisted by the DC office.

- Work closely with USINDO Trustees and Advisors in Jakarta and with Washington
DC office.

- Develop program ideas related to USINDO’s Mission and initiate contact with
prospective partner organizations

- Strengthen USINDO’s capacity to play a helpful role in education and other
sector initiatives under the forthcoming Comprehensive Partnership;

- Backstop USINDO project activities, including Aceh Lab School Project and
Summer Studies program in Yogyakarta;

- Supervise the Jakarta office staff, maintain oversight of in-country budget
and financial operations, local expenses, office operations and periodic
reporting ; manage office administration such as payroll, employee benefits,
business insurance along with other duties required to keep the office
operational;

- Supervise the development and maintenance of the Jakarta database and
specialized contact lists. Contribute to USINDO’s website and publications;

- Work with the Indonesian and U.S. communities in Indonesia to mount programs
in areas relevant to USINDO’s mission and to their areas of interest.

Required Qualifications

- Knowledge of Indonesia and Indonesian personalities and institutions.
Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with government officials and the
private sector in Indonesia at all levels

- Fluency in English and Indonesian, written and spoken Demonstrated speaking
and writing ability.

- Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. university.

- Minimum three years work experience in Indonesia.

- Ability to conceptualize and develop effective program strategy, and to
organize events.

- Ability to assume responsibility for achieving results on time, and to
multi-task.

- Understanding of basic office operations; ability to operate Microsoft
Office.

- Available for a minimum of 2-3 years, subject to satisfactory performance.

Preferred Qualifications

‐ Five years of work
experience in Indonesia

‐ Master’s degree

‐ Demonstrated
proposal-writing ability

‐ Demonstrated office
management ability

‐ Indonesian or
American nationality

Salary: To be determined based on qualifications
