I don't think it was "Most Popular" by a long shot, unless you limit the market. SunOS, AIX, HPUX, IRIX, plus the various AT&T offerings, and, of course, BSD, were all out there.
Really? I'm not sure I would take that bet. I seem to recall Xenix being sold for the Trash-80 Model II which ended its production run in 1984. I'm pretty sure that puts it ahead of almost all of those things except possibly AT&T.
