Creative Labs soundcards are generally well-supported in

I bought it, only to bring it home and find out that it was actually
an Audigy "LS", and that the LS part mattered. They changed the
chipset for the LS and, of course, slaughtered Linux compatibility.
I will never forgive Creative for that. I haven't had sound in Linux
for at least a year now.

The Audigy 2ZS works great in Linux.
But stay away from the SB 128. It also uses an odd chipset. Speculation
on the 'Net is that it's from some minor Euro sound card maker acquired
by Creative. It won't work with Linux, except by way of some pre-beta
contortions to drivers and/or some fun with the kernel.
And last time I shopped for one (a couple of months ago, SB Live! 5.1
cards are scarce, with merchants often pushing the SB 128 instead.
I read somewhere that Creative no longer makes the Live! series (or at
least no longer makes it with the usual chipset - meaning it lives on in
name only).
