I would use cmp for this task. If cmp finds no difference, and you
can open mails with your mail program, you're undoubtedly safe
deleting the old maildir.

Hmm...I considered using diff on the directories, but I couldn't work
out anyway to make it go across two machines.
(Though, on typing this, I suppose I could smbmount one of the machines.)
