fdisk doesn't understand the hfs partition codes. Does parted recognize
the mac partitions ?

Can you mount the whole device using something like:

mount -type hfs /dev/sda /mnt/ipod ?  (after mkdir /mnt/ipod, as root)

Or use the fat32 conversion procedure ?
