Do you suggest others do the same?

Yes. I've heard far far too many horror stories of paypal.

Well, I don't disagree with you. However, PayPal is pretty much the only game in town for cheap transactions between currencies.

I wanted to buy No Sweat Cantonese by Amy Leung (see http://www.amyleunglanguage.com/book/book.html CAUTION: the page has a eye searing hot pink background).

Out of print here, but the author is quite nice and responds to email. She has plenty of copies (no stupid IRS inventory regulations) and was willing to send me one. I needed to send her 200 HKD (about $20 IIRC).

Talk about a nightmare.

She's not set up as a merchant account since she doesn't do enough direct business. Personal check processing fees on her side were about 400 HKD. So that wasn't going to work.

So, I looked on this side for various methods to send money. Foreign bank draft has the same problems. $55 processing fee. Grrrr.

Well, I could just FedEx *cash*. Somebody could actually steal the first two and I would still be ahead of the bank drafts ...

PayPal, however, works fine. I can put it in in US dollars and PayPal transfers it to their local affiliate which allows her to withdraw in HKD. Sure, there's a bit of overhead, but not much more than standard PayPal.
